Stephen Ministry equips lay people to provide distinctively Christian one-to-one care to those in the FBC community who are experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances. The name Stephen Ministry comes from Acts 6:5 and refers to Stephen, who was selected as one of seven leaders to serve the early church, because “he was a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit.” Stephen Ministers receive extensive training and are commissioned to serve the church by ministering to the needs of an individual within the church or community.
Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours of initial training in important caring ministry skills and concepts. This training is offered over the course of 20 weekly sessions. Training is held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Training is offered on a regular basis. Materials for the training are purchased by participants at the cost of $50. Stephen Ministers also participate in regular continuing education, skill building and support/supervision groups. How Can I Participate?Interested people are encouraged to contact Larry Merideth, Minister of Pastoral Care and Senior Adults at 918.594.5040. Following an initial interview, training will begin. Participants agree to maintain their involvement in pre-class reading and weekly meetings, plus the Continuing Education and Supervision process. Caring Relationships Persons needing care are referred to the Stephen Ministry by the Pastoral staff, other church members or by request of the individual. The relationship is maintained as long as the need legitimately exists.
